Wekerle Housing Program

2026-09-02
The government is preparing a new housing construction and rental housing program, published in the Hungarian Official Gazette on Monday evening.

The government has tasked Minister of Transport and Investment Dávid Vitézy and Minister of Finance András Kármán with preparing the Wekerle Housing Program. The program will receive 550 million euros in EU funds, or 201 billion forints, and must be prepared by September 30.

The goal is to expand the housing supply and increase the proportion of affordable housing. The plans include the use of brownfield sites for housing, the expansion of dormitory and institutional rental housing capacity, closer cooperation with local governments, and the simplification of the regulation and licensing of housing construction. The government would also encourage energy-efficient and sustainable housing construction and the emergence of institutional investors.

The government is also preparing a system by the end of December that will encourage the construction of affordable rental housing with financial and regulatory tools. This could include the creation of a state housing agency system.
